The Grove Ridgerunners wrestling team had its first home match on Tuesday Dec. 12 against the Jay Bulldogs.

The wrestling team ranging in weight from 135 to 285 had a strong showing against the Jay team.

Grove finished the night with a win scoring 54-27 over the Jay Bulldogs.

The Ridgerunners had several wrestlers win by fall, which in wrestling means pinning the shoulder blades of your opponent for 2 seconds.

There were a few notable matches of the night with the first being that of Haven Pennington.

Pennington, the only girl on the team, won her match in a dramatic fashion.

She was paired up against a young man from Jay in the same weight class and had fallen behind in points.

During the last period her opponent was running out of the ring in an apparent effort to run the time off the clock to win by default.

Pennington managed to wrap her opponents legs up and pinned him on his head winning the match despite being behind.

Brenden Hernandez may have lost his match but he certainly worked the hardest of any wrestler on the team to do so.

Hernandez finished his three two minute long periods in a tie sending to two boys into overtime.

It wasn’t until the end of the second round of overtime that Jay was able to get the upper hand over Hernandez.

Freshman Wesley Downing was filling in for his weight class at 152 and got a big win for the team according to Coach John Henry Ward.

“It wasn’t a bad night its never perfect unless you win all your matches," Ward said. "I’m pleased with the effort and how well the team got behind each other.

“There were no surprises tonight and it was good for Haven to stay in a match.

"It's always about improvement because unlike other schools we don’t wrestle year long and many of our athletes compete in other sports.”
