Raymond W. Garberding, age 90 of Grand Rapids, Minn., died peacefully on Jan. 18, 2008 at Wendigo Pines.
Services: Visitation will be Thursday, January 24 from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Funeral Service at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Grand Rapids. Rev. James Anthony will officiate. Burial with full military honors will be at Itasca-Calvary Cemetery in Grand Rapids.
Memorials are preferred to First Evangelical Lutheran Church or VFW Post 1720 of Grand Rapids.
Ray was born in 1917 to William and Ida Garberding in Goodland, Minn. He attended schools in Grand Rapids and graduated from Grand Rapids High School in 1934. Ray married Olga Lesar in 1937 and they resided in Remer and Grand Rapids. Ray was a member of the VFW and served in the U.S. Navy, mostly in the South Pacific as a sea plane tender. After his service years, he enjoyed playing baseball. He also coached baseball and was an umpire and a referee. Ray enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family and many friends. He was an active member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church and a dedicated member of the Bible classes and menís club. Ray was a loving father and family was very important to him. Ray and Olga were married for 67 years and will be sadly missed.
Preceding him in death were his parents, his loving wife Olga and grandson Timothy Garberding.
Survived by son, James (Margaret) Garberding of Pueblo, Colo.; daughter, M. Morgaine Avalon of Prescott, Wis.; grandchildren, James R. (Kristine) Garberding of Keller, Texas, Mark Garberding of Pueblo, Colo., Andrew Garberding of Pueblo, Colo., Ralph (Stephanie) Strangis of Coppell, Texas, Paul (Suzie) Strangis of Maple Grove, Minn., Jason Strangis of Prescott, Wis., Anthea Strangis of Los Angeles, Calif.; great-grandchildren, Brian, Amanda, Ashley, Brandy, Salena, Jordan, Sarah, Makenna, Savannah, Kristine, Sabrina, Sandy, Angel and Sal; four great-great-grandchildren, Jonathan, Alex, Isis and Jaziah.
