A Grove man died of injuries he received in a fire at his home Sunday, according to officials at Cowskin Fire Department.
Cary “Butch” Gifford, 59, lost his life in a fire that broke out Sunday morning in his mobile home at Lee’s Resort, Cowskin Fire Chief Monty Hackler said.
Hackler said his department received the fire call at 8:51 a.m. and arrived on the scene at 8:57 a.m.
“A male victim that was in the house (Gifford) had been extricated before we got there,” Hackler explained.
He said Gifford sustained third degree burns over 80 percent of his body and had likely perished from smoke inhalation, although the cause of death had not yet been confirmed at press time.
According to Hackler, the fire was confined to the living room and a “small overstuffed recliner.”
“The cause of the fire is undetermined,” Hackler said, although he noted that it was most likely caused by a cigarette.
