JAY - A Grove manís quest for parole in the second-degree manslaughter death of a construction worker was denied.

Herbert Magee II, 31, was sentenced to a 17-year prison term for the 1999 stabbing death of Michael Thomas Jeffers, 27, of Casper, Wyo.† Jeffers was living in Grove while working with a construction crew on Sail Boat Bridge on Grand Lake.

Magee appeared before the Oklahoma Pardon and Parole board in February.††

The state medical examiner testified in Mageeís trial Jeffers was stabbed 17 times. Magee admitted stabbing Jeffers six times but said he acted in self-defense.

Witnesses testified during trial that a heated dispute erupted between the two men when Magee returned to Jeffers' home to retrieve personal items that belonged to Magee's cousin, who had been living with Jeffers.

Magee's first two trials ended in mistrials after jurors deadlocked on self-defense issues.
