AFTON - Anticipation of large crowds and reduced availability of parking at Shangri-La Resort due to construction of the resort’s new $6 million Activity Park have resulted in new parking instructions for those planning to attend the July 3 Monkey Island Fireworks celebration by automobile. Auto parking will be across Highway 125 immediately north of Grand Lake Regional Airport on Monkey Island. Attendees will be taken to and from the Shangri-La Resort Hotel’s Grand Lawn viewing area via shuttle buses.
Parking areas at the resort hotel will be reserved for registered hotel guests who will be issued parking passes for the event. Marina parking will be reserved for slip renters who plan to utilize their boats to view the fireworks from the water.
Monkey Island residents who own golf carts are urged to drive golf carts to the event due to limited parking in the hotel area. Those who have boats are urged to enjoy the show from the water. Since boat anchorage is on an open part of the lake at the tip of Monkey Island, there is virtually no problem either with arrivals or departures at the anchorage area.
The Grand River Dam Authority, the name sponsor of the Monkey Island Fireworks event, presented their $3,000 contribution to the exciting event last week. GRDA Community Relations Officer Ed Ferguson made the formal presentation of GRDA’s donation to Monkey Island Fireworks Committee members Peggy Howard, Mike Williams, and Doug Smith.
“We are grateful, as always, for the continuing annual support from the Grand River Dam Authority, but we are still raising money for the show,” said Williams. “We’re getting closer every day to covering the cost of this wonderful patriotic evening. We are appreciative of donations, not only from GRDA, but from the dozens and dozens of other supporters who have pitched in to make this the memory-making event of the year.”
Donations may be made to the “Monkey Island Fireworks Committee” and mailed to the committee at 30397 South 567 Road, Unit 63, Monkey Island, OK 74331.
