COWETA, Okla. - The Ridgerunner basketball team hoped to keep things rolling after a strong showing in the Tri-State Classic over the weekend. Unfortunately, they took it on the chin with a 59-35 loss at sixteenth-ranked 5A Coweta Tuesday, January 28.

Coweta 59, Grove 35

Running their offense to attack the Ridgerunners zone, Coweta slowly started building a lead. When the Tigers weren’t driving to the rim, they were busy kicking passes out to open three-point shooters who did a good job adding points quickly for Coweta. Grove quickly switched defenses but the Tigers took a 12-7 lead after the first quarter.

Greg McCurdy got things started for the Ridgerunners in the second quarter with an old-fashioned three-point play. Aason Cross had stolen the ball and took the defender deep into the lane before a perfect bounce pass set McCurdy up for the layup. Down just two, the Ridgerunners had a chance to tie it but the contested layup rolled off the front of the rim and back to the Tigers.

From that point on, the Ridgerunners were unable to score for the rest of the half. Grove's almost seven minute scoreless drought turned into a 9-0 Tiger run and a 21-10 deficit at the half.

Coweta was constantly trying to play at a faster pace than the Ridgerunners would allow in the first half. In the second half, the Ridgerunners had to play more aggressively trying to cut the Tahlequah lead and that lead to a much faster paced game. The Ridgerunners were outscored 38-25 in the second half and ended up losing by 24 points.

Hank Hacker lead the Ridgeurnners with 9 points. Hacker added 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, and 1 blocked shot. Cross also had 9 points with 5 rebounds and 1 assist. Emmanuel Crawford had 4 points and 1 steal. McCurdy had 3 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 steals. Brendan Cornog added 3 points and blocked 1 shot. Braden Pittman had 2 points, 3 rebounds, and 1 steal. Corbin Beal had 1 point, 1 rebound, 2 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocked shots. Derek Loomis had 1 point and 2 rebounds. Colin Rowton had 1 rebound and 1 steal. Willy Lopez had 1 rebound and 1 assist. Kyle Cowen also played in the game although he accrued no counting stats.

The Ridgerunners will get back in action on Friday, January 31 hoping to avenge an early season loss to Tahlequah. The game will begin at 7:30 p.m.
