GROVE, Okla. - With the rise of church related shootings, Grove Church of Christ is hosting an Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter and Evacuate, or ALICE, class to educate local churches on what to do if a situation were to arise locally.
The class will be held on Saturday, February 8 at 4 p.m. at the Grove Church of Christ, located at 1001 S. Grand Street in Grove. Surrounding area churches are invited to attend the class. ALICE training is formalized and used by the military, schools, churches, industry and companies. The training provides an effective and proven skill set to prevent and mitigate violent threats. Coffee and pastries will be served after the class to those who wish to stay and learn more information from our ALICE instructor.
The ALICE class instructor will be Buck Owen, who is a certified instructor with an extensive military and police background. Owen graduated at the top of his class from Missouri State University’s Criminal Justice Program and served the Southwest City Police Department as a sergeant and worked as a McDonald County Missouri Deputy Sheriff. Owen has also served as a McDonald County School Resource Officer, a Newton County, Missouri Juvenile officer, as well as a River Patrol officer and Special Response Team member.
Churches in the United States have experienced an increasing number of violent attacks in the past eleven years, resulting in approximately 105 fatalities and countless life threatening injuries.
The most recent act of violence in a church occurred on December 29 at the West Freeway Church of Christ in a suburb of Fort Worth. The congregation had a trained cadre of members providing security for their congregation and were able to remove the shooter within seven seconds of the first shot fired. The police response was between 3-4 minutes and without the intervention of trained member of the church, more lives may have been lost.
Grove Church of Christ invite all local area churches take advantage of this valuable program and prepare in the event of a worst case scenario.
