JAY, Okla. - The Lady Red continued with their strong play on the basketball court taking second in the Jay Tournament this past weekend.

Grove won their first game 54-24 over rival Jay, won their second game 43-26 against 18th ranked 4A opponent Locust Grove, but couldn’t overcome the number 1 ranked 3A Sequoyah Tahlequah Lady Indians in the tournament championship.

The Lady Red will get back in action when they travel to Coweta on Tuesday.

Grove players Rory Geer and Elizabeth Cash were named to the all-tournament team recognizing them for their contributions to their team’s success.

Grove 54, Jay 24

The Lady Red opened the first game against Jay with a 15-0 run and finished the first quarter with a 17-3 lead. From there, the scoring continued and the Lady Red finished the 30 point rout.

Rory Geer lead all scorers with 23 points. Geer added 8 rebounds, 2 assists, and 4 steals. Elizabeth Cash had 14 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal. Kolby Boyett added 8 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, and 1 blocked shot. Megan Gibbs had 3 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists. Dawn Blake had 2 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals. Baylee Gregg had 2 points, 2 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals. Mikalle Pair scored 2 points, grabbed 4 rebounds, dished out 2 assists, and had 3 steals. Anna Bacon had 4 rebounds and 2 steals.

Grove 43, Locust Grove 26

The game against the Locust Grove Lady Pirates on Friday night ended up much like the game the night before for the Lady Red. Grove had a 30-20 lead at halftime that grew to 19 points early in the third quarter. The Lady Red defense held Locust Grove to 20.5 percent shooting. The Lady Red forced 24 turnovers in the game.

Geer lead the team with 14 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 5 steals, and 1 blocked shot. Boyett had 13 points, 7 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal. Cash had 5 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 steals. Cash was very active defensively racking up 7 deflected passes as well. Bacon had 5 points, 1 rebound, and 1 assist. Gregg had 4 points and 2 steals. Pair had 2 points, lead the team with 11 rebounds, and 2 steals. Blake had 1 rebound and 5 steals. Gibbs had 1 rebound and 1 assist.

Tahlequah Sequoyah 61, Grove 36

The Lady Red lost their 8-game winning streak in the championship game when they were defeated by the Tahlequah Sequoyah Lady Indians. The Lady Red fell behind 14-7 in the first quarter and could never really get things going against the tough Lady Indians defense. Sequoyah forced 30 Lady Red turnovers, scoring 26 points in transition off those turnovers which proved to be the difference in the game.

Geer had 17 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal in the defeat. Boyett had 11 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal. Pair had 3 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, and 3 steals. Cash had 2 points, 3 rebounds, and 1 assist. Gregg had 2 points, 3 rebounds, and 1 steal. Blake had 1 point, 1 rebound, 2 assists, and 1 steal. Bacon had 4 rebounds in the game while Gregg had 3 rebounds and 1 steal.

The Lady Red will play to win on Tuesday, January 28 at Coweta.
