The Lady Red basketball team is wearing down the competition.
The team has implemented a three-quarters court press this season that exhausts the opposing offense and that takes full advantage of Grove's long arms and quick reflexes. This press was extremely effective on Tuesday, January 21 when the Lady Red hosted the Claremore Lady Zebras.
Grove 71, Claremore 18
The Lady Red slowly racked up nearly half of their first quarter points in the first five minutes of the game. Claremore's lone basket of the quarter was scored by Cloe Dennis with 2:56 left to play. Then Grove decided that to really show the Lady Zebras what they were made of and scored another eight points, ending the quarter with a score of 15-2.
In the second quarter, junior Rory Geer scored 14 points including a buzzer beater layup, with an assist from Dawn Blake, who stole the inbounds pass from Claremore. The score stood 38-8 at the half.
The third quarter was when the Lady Zebras hit double digits. Grove fouled on a shot and sent Hailey Grant to the line. Grant made both shots pushing Claremore to 10 on the scoreboard. On Grove's offensive side, Geer and sophomore Kolby Boyett scored six each to continue expanding the lead. The quarter ended 52-10.
The fourth quarter saw Boyett with nine more points, including a three from the 6'1" center. Sophomore Megan Gibbs joined in, adding six points to the total. For the Lady Zebras, Rader Yewell hit a three, Kayla Holt and Lauren Tackett added two each and Grant hit a free throw. The team was 1-10 from the line. Grove took home the win, 71-18.
Geer scored 24 for the Lady Red, followed by Boyett with 17, Gibbs with 10, Baylee Gregg, Anna Bacon and Elizabeth Cash each with 4 and Dawn Blake and Mikalle Pair both had 3.
For the Lady Zebras, Grant had 6, Dennis had 5, Yewell had 3 and Holt and Tackett each had 2.
The Lady Red are now in the midst of the Tri-State Classic Tournament in Jay. The team kicked off the tournament against the host team, the Jay Lady Bulldogs, on Thursday, January 23. The tournament will continue through Saturday, January 25. The Lady Red will be on the road at Coweta on Tuesday, January 28.
