Christmas time! Time of gift giving! Time of gift receiving!

Did you get the gift or gifts that you wanted? Were the gifts you gave received with enthusiasm or indifference? I am told the day after Christmas is the great gift exchange day.

We hear clichés associated with gift giving. It is not the gift; it’s the thought that counts.

I am sure that each of us can think back to a time when we were given a gift that was truly meaningful, one we were excited to receive. I am sure each of us remembers a gift that did not meet our expectations. But I am also sure that we did not turn down gifts we were given and that we opened each and every gift.

But Christmas should remind us, not simply of gifts, but the gift; the gift that God gave. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. (John 3:16, KJV) God’s Word translates with simplicity in this way: God loved the world this way: He gave his only Son so that everyone who believes in him will not die but will have eternal life. (GW)

Let me ask you this, have you received or accepted the Christmas gift that God gave you, His one and only Son? That is the gift that can change your life. That is a gift that keeps on giving. That is the gift that gives us eternal life. If you have received God’s gift you will be shouting, Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift! (II Cor. 9:15, NIV)
