Jay Homecoming was Friday, October 11 and while the celebration was great, it’s always a bigger celebration when the Bulldogs nail the win, but that was not to be the case that night.
The hard-fighting Bulldogs were overcome by the Verdigris Cardinals, Jay 13 and Verdigris 48.
The Cardinals arrived in Jay with 3-2 record, compared to the Bulldog’s 2-3 record, a close comparison.
Though the loss was hard to take, there were some amazing plays made by the Bulldogs.
Brody Winfield made a pass to L-Ray Kirk with a Verdigris defender ready to take Kirk down as he caught the ball, but Kirk immediately made a backward pass to Zach Coy.
Coy broke free and ran from Jay’s own 30 yard line all the way to Verdigris’ 35 yard line, for a 35 yard gain.
The Bulldogs’ first TD was scored by Winfield as he made a 10 yard run right up the gut, finishing the run in the end zone.
Jay executed their next touchdown in the fourth quarter as the Cardinals tried to nail Kirk in the backfield, after the hand off from Winfield.
Kirk shook off the tackle, did a quick reverse, sprinted to the opposite side and ran down sideline to secure the touchdown.
Coach Warren Kirk, as always, was proud of how hard his boys fought against a good team.
“We came out and dug a hole we couldn’t get out of," said Kirk in the past. "We have to cut down on our mistakes and play Bulldog football here on out.”
The Bulldogs next game is at home on Thursday, October 17 against the Locust Grove Pirates, who come to town with a 2-5 overall record, compared to Jay’s 2-4 record.
