James “Jim” Derwin, age 76, of Grove, Oklahoma passed away on Friday, October 11, 2019, at Integris Grove Hospital after several years of struggling with his health.

Jim was born on July 30, 1943, to Thomas and Ruth (Mobra) Derwin in Neosho, Missouri. He grew up in Wyandotte, Oklahoma and graduated from Wyandotte High School in 1963, where he earned honors in many sports as he was a phenomenal athlete. Jim began his college career at NEO A&M College where he was a four sport letterman. He went on to earn his Bachelor of Science Degree in Education at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah.  

Throughout the years, Jim taught history and coached at several different  schools, ending his educational career at White Oak High School in 2005. Jim was always a story teller and some of his fondest memories were those of the students he taught and athletes he coached.  

On May 31, 2001, Jim married Jo Stanley Mead in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, and the couple made their home in Grove. He attended the Foundation Freewill Baptist Church and enjoyed fishing and woodworking and was an avid OU Sooner fan.  

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Left to cherish Jim’s memory: wife, Jo Derwin, daughter Keni Iverson and husband, Eric of Grove, Oklahoma, son Derek Derwin and wife, Crystal of Miami, Oklahoma, and step-daughter, JoDee Liptak and husband, Arturo of Bixby, Oklahoma.  He cherished his grandchildren Lauren, Emilee, Danielle, Kale, Felicia, Veronica and Gabe, and his great grandchildren Cooper and Colton. 

A celebration of Jim’s life will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 16, 2019 at the Tom Derwin Community Center in Wyandotte, Oklahoma.  In honor of Jim the family requests that those attending wear OU attire.
