“Fishing is a lot like baseball, full of curves and sliders. It’s how you swing that makes a difference.”

Grove and Grand Lake was all agog last weekend. We had 2 big tournaments in town, the Costa series FLW with 96 boats and just under 200 anglers, and the Skeeter XFL series that had 108 boats and around 200 anglers. ALL out of Wolf Creek Park. Cudos to everyone involved to make it work. The FLW event was won by Curt Warren with a 3 day weight of 46lbs 7oz and co-angler Steven Miller won with 27lbs 15oz. The Skeeter XFL event was won by the team of Luther and Mickey Martin with a 2 day weight of 30lbs 9oz. The Waholi Bass Challenge is this Sunday and usually brings over 200 boats.

Now to the fishing. We had a bunch of rain, 6.5” at my house in Grove, which will impact the fishing short term. The lake has turned muddy, but the level is still good and the temperature is still in the upper 70’s. We’ll have to see what the cooler temperatures next week will bring.

Most of the black bass are coming shallow on spinner baits and square bills. It seems the better bite is later in the day so you don’t have to get up early. Concentrate on main lake points. Gary McDaniels, Get Hooked Guide Service, and I met up the other day and he’s on one heck of a crappie bite. Minnows in 20ft of water 10ft off the bottom are working. Spoonbill fishing is excellent.

Until next time, keep your bait in the water. Clint Baranowski
