The Lady Red softball team took another step toward the playoffs by winning their last district game on Thursday, September 26 against Jay 6-0. The win solidifies second place in the district for the Lady Red with a district record of 10-2. Overall, the Grove softball team has a record of 22-6 and hopes of a third consecutive trip to the Oklahoma state softball tournament in Oklahoma City.
Grove 6, Jay 0
The Lady Red got things going immediately at Jay on Thursday. Catcher Ava Sarwinski drove a ball into deep left center for an easy double. Lauren Outhier bunter her to third and Grove head coach Jeremy Collins got a little too aggressive sending her home on the play when the ball got away at first base. Jay was able to get the ball back into home plate in time to tag Sarwinski out. Outhier advanced to second. Senior Mikalle Pair took a walk to put runners on first and second. After a wild pitch, senior Elizabeth Cash grounded an infield single off the pitcher scoring the first Grove run of the night. Three consecutive walks by Laken Malone, Anastasia Pace, and Dawn Blake forced in two more Lady Red runs making the score 3-0 after the first inning.
Laken Malone made the start for the Lady Red and had a strong outing. She threw 7.0 innings allowing just one bloop infield single and hit one batter. Malone added to her season total with 16 strikeouts and no walks.
“She pitched really well,” said Collins. “She struck out the first 7 batters of the game. I don’t know if anyone can have a better start to a game than that. We put a few more runs on the board and beat a very improved team today.”
The Lady Red scored a single run in the second, third, and sixth innings to make the final score 6-0.
Pair had an RBI double in the sixth inning and walked three times showing a lot of patience at the plate.
Sarwinski had three hits including two doubles. She scored two runs of her own.
Malone had a single and walk to help herself out.
Blake had a single, run batted in, and scored a run herself. She also walked twice.
Pace had one hit, a run batted in, and a walk.
The Lady Red traveled to Webb City High School in Webb City, Missouri on Monday, September 30 to take on a strong Webb City team. Grove will then host Claremore Sequoyah on Tuesday, October 1 and travel to Bartlesville Thursday, October 3 to wrap up their regular season schedule. The Lady Red will get their playoff assignment at the beginning of next week.
