Longtime Grove School board member Jerry Crossley was honored on Tuesday, April 9 for his decades of service to the Grove Schools.

Superintendent Pat Dodson presented Crossley with a Certificate as he begins his 33rd year on the school board. Crossley, who ran opposed in the last election, was first elected to the school board in 1986.

Never comfortable with a spotlight on his contributions, Crossley was most vocal during the meeting about the new lighting proposal for Ridgerunner Stadium.

“We have had those same lights since the field was built in 1958,” Crossley said.

Dodson explained the four utility poles holding the lights are full “of woodpecker holes” and “one (pole) is leaning.”

The board unanimously approved Boynton Williams and Associates as consultants and Techline Sport Lighting company for Ridgerunner Stadium lighting project. The Techline Sport Lighting bid was $294,150.

They also approved for Dodson to solicit to local banks for the best interest rate for a three-year lease purchase for the stadium lighting project.

The lighting project is expected to be completed before the first home football game, he said.

Students Haley Dozier and Macy Barnes were both recognized during the meeting. Dozier is a recipient for the State Superintendent of Education Fine Arts Award in Drama and Barnes is a three Sport All-Stater.

“We have a very talented senior class,” said High School Principal Renae Dozier.

It is believed that Barnes is the first three-sport All-Stater in the school’s history.

The school’s Johnson O’Malley Program was awarded Cherokee Nation Oklahoma Exemplary Program of the Year and Terry Guthridge is the District Teacher of the Year and Delores Hogner is the Support Employee of the Year.

In other business, the board voted to reorganize itself keeping Dr. James Rutter as president, Clara Mills as vice-president, and adding Karen Dyer as clerk.
