The Grove Ridgerunners faced off against the Northwest Arkansas Hornets homeschool team on Friday, March 8, under the lights at Jim Beauchamp Field in Grove.
The Ridgerunner pitchers Jonas Chaney and Lane Rutherford combined to throw a no-hitter in the 8-0 run rule victory.
The Hornets threatened to score in the first inning after two errors and a walk. However, a pick off at second and a runner thrown out trying to steal third ended the threat.
The Ridgerunners went to work in the bottom of the first inning. Hayes Pavatt walked and was replaced by Lane Rutherford who was serving as the courtesy runner for the Ridgerunners.
Rutherford stole second and moved to third on a ground ball by Logan Engles. Logan Evans walked followed by a walk from Chaney. Bryce Davis courtesy ran for Chaney who was pitching.
A two out single by Isaac Lopez drove in two runs putting the Ridgerunners up 2-0. Wyatt Wall walked to load the bases again.
Cooper Smith got a free RBI when he was hit by the pitch and Hank Hacker struck out, but the pitch went to the backstop and he was able to advance to first base while two runs scored. The Ridgerunners were up 5-0 going into the second.
Chaney worked around a walk and a hit batter to get out of the second with no damage. The Ridgerunners threatened in the bottom of the inning, but were unable to score.
Rutherford came in to pitch the third inning. Rutherford walked two batters in the inning but induced a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning after a strikeout.
Hacker walked followed by a Gunner Jensen walk to start a threat for the Ridgerunners in the bottom of the third.
Engles hit a ground ball that turned into an error allowing him to reach base making the score 7-0 in favor of the Ridgerunners.
Rutherford struck out the side in the top of the fourth.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Ridgerunners scored one more run to reach the final score of 8-0. Case Marsh doubled to deep left center field and came around to score on an Isaac Lopez groundout.
Chaney got credit for the win pitching 2.0 innings, giving up no runs or hits, walking 3, hitting 1, and striking out 3. Rutherford finished the game pitching 2.0 innings giving up no runs or hits, walking 2, and striking out 4.
Engles, Marsh, and Lopez had the hits for the Ridgerunners. The team walked a combined nine times to keep plenty of runners on base. Lopez had 3 RBI while Smith had 1. Hacker stole 3 bases while Jensen and Rutherford each had 1.
The Ridgerunners are now 2-1 on the season and were scheduled to play a doubleheader on Monday, March 11 at home against district opponent Miami.
It was previously scheduled for Tuesday, but moved up one day to avoid the expected rain.
The Ridgerunners will host Rogers Providence on Thursday, March 14, before heading to the Heritage Tournament in Heritage, Arkansas on Friday and Saturday, March 15 and 16.
