The Grove Ridgerunners lost another close basketball game at home on Friday, Feb. 8, to Coweta by a score of 42-38.

The loss makes the Ridgerunners 8-11 on the season. They get back in action on Tuesday, Feb. 12, when they host #10 Class 5A Pryor for Senior Night around 7:30 pm.

The Ridgerunners have played in 15 games that have been decided by 10 points or less. In those 15 games, the Ridgerunners record is 6-9 and their scoring differential is -23.

This scoring differential breaks down to a difference of 1.5 points a game meaning they are playing a lot of close games and may not be as bad their sub-.500 record indicates.

The game against Coweta did not go as planned. The Ridgerunners were down 16-5 at the end of the first quarter but actually outscored Coweta in the next three quarters. It just wasn’t enough to overcome the early 11-point deficit and they finished 4 points short.

“It was just a tough one,” Grove head coach Zach Trimble said of the game. “We got behind early and fought so hard to get back in. We won the second, third, and fourth quarter.

"We just didn’t have enough time to finish this one the right way. We had a great crowd and I’m disappointed we couldn’t get a win for them but we’ll keep working and get ready for our next one.”

Senior Chat Hayes started the scoring for the Ridgerunners when Braden Pittman fired a pass to him. Hayes hit a three-pointer to tied the game at 3-3. Wrangler Beal had the second Ridgerunner basket as he caught a pass from Aason Cross as he dove to the right elbow.

Beal cut horizontally across the lane and finished on the left side of the basket with his left hand for two points bringing the game back to one possession.

This is when Coweta went on a 10-0 scoring run putting the Ridgerunners in the big first quarter hole they couldn’t dig out of.

Hayes lead the Ridgerunners in scoring with 13. He also added 4 rebounds and 1 assist.

Zane Knox lead the Ridgerunners with 9 rebounds. Knox also contributed 12 points, 1 assist, and 2 steals.

Colin Rowton had 6 points, 1 rebound, and 1 steal.

Wrangler Beal had 4 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal.

Hank Hacker had 3 points.

Pittman had 1 rebound, 1 assist, 1 steal, and 1 block.

Cross and Logan Evans both had an assist.

Trent Beal and Colin Craig each had a rebound.

Greg McCurdy had 2 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal.

The Ridgerunners will celebrate the careers of five seniors on Tuesday at their game against Pryor, ceremonies are set to take place prior to the game at 7:30 p.m., in the Ridgerunner Gymanisum.
