The Lady Red were unable to improve on their record dropping a game against Coweta at home on Friday night by a score of 51-43.
The Lady Red still have an impressive record of 17-3 on the season.
They will look to get back on the winning track on Tuesday, Feb. 12, when they celebrate senior night against Pryor. That game will be around 6 p.m.
Grove has four seniors on their girls basketball team. Macee Barnes, Jaden Redus, Elyssa Teel, and Teagan Dixon make up the Class of 2019 for the Lady Red.
The first quarter started out quickly for the Lady Red. Senior Macee Barnes had two quick baskets to put the Lady Red up 4-0. Mikalle Pair had an assist on the second one before she added a basket a few plays later.
Meanwhile, the Lady Red transition defense was a little shaky getting beat back a few times and giving up quick baskets. Pair’s basket put the Lady Red down 8-6.
After another transition basket for Coweta, Barnes again hit a short jumper to bring the Lady Red within two points. Sophomore Rory Geer had the assist. A three-pointer for Coweta and the score was 13-8 against Grove ending the first quarter.
Coweta scored the first basket of the second quarter nearly doubling up their lead against the Lady Red 15-8. Barnes came back and made another basket making the score 15-10.
After a substitution, Coach Bassett’s moves paid off immediately as a fresh Pair pulled in a steal ending a Coweta possession prematurely, and senior Elyssa Teel grabbed an offensive rebound saving the extra possession. Teel was fouled as she went right back up and made both free throws to cut the score to 15-12.
The score stayed that way for several minutes as each team went back and forth unable to add any points.
Finally, Elizabeth Cash grabbed an offensive rebound and was able to go back up and score two points to cut the Coweta lead to one. Barnes capitalized on a steal and put the Lady Red up 16-15 on the very next possession.
The Lady Red lead was short lived because Coweta came down and hit a three-pointer making it 18-16 in their favor just two minutes before halftime.
Late in the second quarter, the Lady Red got some good ball movement when Barnes sent the ball to Pair at the high post who skipped it down in a classic high low move to Cash who made the layup.
The Lady Red held on defense and the score was 19-18 in favor of Coweta at the half.
The Lady Red couldn’t get anything going during the third quarter. The score was in favor of Coweta at 30-24 going into the fourth quarter. The Lady Red scored 19 points in the fourth quarter but they also gave up 21 and couldn’t get it any closer.
The Lady Red had to take chances and gamble on defense and it was both cost them and was effective for them. The final was 51-43 giving the Lady Red just their third loss on the season.
Barnes lead the Lady Red with 22 points. She also had 5 rebounds, 1 assist, and 2 steals.
Geer had 8 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal.
Cash had 6 points and 7 rebounds.
Redus had 3 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist, and 2 steals.
Pair had 2 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals, and 3 blocks.
Teel had 2 points and 4 rebounds.
Teagan Dixon had 2 rebounds.
