Perhaps the most painful tool Satan uses against the Christian is the family and the rejection and persecution the family pours out upon the new believer.
We could say this is the beginning of all persecution against believers when Cain kills Able.
Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town and in his own home.” (Matt. 13:57) Over-familiarity is an issue. Families want us to measure up to their ideas, not God’s.
In China for example, when a child becomes a follower of Jesus the rest of the family feels the honor of the family is being destroyed. These same concerns are found in Buddhist countries and Islamic countries.
The scriptures tell us the enemies we may face can be members of our own household. Brother against brother, sister against sister. Parent against the child. Emotionally these trials can be the hardest we ever face.
Often children are tossed out the door and become street people or with God’s help, they find one of the secret safe-houses designed to help Christians survive and restart their lives.
We can pray for ministries like Open Doors International, as they provide safe-houses all over the world in the most dangerous countries for Christians.
Sometimes these stories don’t end happily in a secret safe-house. In Pakistan, a father was asked why he murdered his daughter.
He answered simply, “I didn’t murder my daughter. When she became a Christian, she was no longer my daughter.”
He will never be charged for his crime. Please pray for all believers facing family persecution.
