The Grove Farmers Market, sponsored by the Grove Area Merchants, opens for the season on Saturday, April 29, and will continue through Saturday, Oct. 14.

The market takes place every Saturday and Wednesday, from 8 a.m. to noon, on the Grove Community Center lawn.

This year, the market will feature producer-only items. This means everything sold will be either hand-crafted or grown by the vendor.

Cheryl Franklin, market manager, said she is excited about this year's offerings.

"This move, enables us to have an Oklahoma Grown status, which will help our market grow," Franklin said. "It allows us to pursue grants and other educational opportunities, as well as be listed as part of the Oklahoma Grown exchange."

Franklin said there is a demand, from consumers, to have a producer-only market.

"The concept of a local farmers market is to provide the community with locally grown fruits and vegetables, as well as locally produced items," Franklin said. "Our main goal is to connect local vendors with people in the community."

Throughout the season, Franklin said, local musicians will be on hand showcasing their talent.

The first Saturday will feature Mack Sampson, 11, the son of Jack and Krista Sampson of Grove.

Mack Sampson performs on a variety of stringed instruments, including the banjo.

Slots for performers remain, and Franklin said persons interested in taking part in the market are encouraged to contact her to be placed on the schedule.

Additionally, volunteers are needed to help staff the GAMA booth - and serve as liaisons between the market organizers and the producers - as well as answer questions from the visiting public about other shopping opportunities in Grove.

Returning vendors, Franklin said, include multiple produce famers, as well as Diamondhead Wine and Four States Honey.

Franklin continues to take applications for vendors interested in taking part in the 2017 Grove Farmers Market.

The market will now be a producer-only market. All products will be required to be home-grown or handmade by the vendor.

Cost is $35 per 10x10 spot for the season. A limited number of day-only spots are available.
