The Grove Ridgerunner JV squad improved their season mark to 4-0 Monday evening with a 22-8 win over the Pryor Tigers JV unit at Ridgerunner Stadium.
The Tigers opened the dance with a 46 yard touchdown pass in the closing seconds of the first quarter. A bad snap on the PAT attempt left Pryor with a six point edge.
The Ridgerunners scored their first touchdown of the night on their opening possession of the second quarter. The drive was capped by a Jarrod Leach three yard dive for pay dirt and was fueled by a big reception from quarterback Adam Steffenson to receiver Jake Martin. Steffenson and Martin hooked up on the two point conversion to give the Ridgerunners a lead that they would never relinquish.
A nice return to midfield by the Tigers on the ensuing kickoff was negated by a Pryor fumble on their first snap that was scooped up by Groveís Trent Rabe.
From there Steffenson found Martin and Brody Scott for receptions that set up another Leach rushing touchdown. Steffenson hit Cody Medeiros for the two-point conversion to put Grove up 16-6 with 4:26 left in the half.
Pryor managed to march to midfield on their next drive but another fumble, this one picked up by Ryan Barton, gave the Ridgerunner offense one more shot before the break.
With the line of scrimmage marked as the 50 yard line Grove executed a perfect hook and lateral play as Steffenson found Martin who pitched to Leach who then took it all the way for a final first half score. The two point conversion failed and so the Ridgerunner troops took a comfortable 22-6 lead into the lockers.
The Tigers began their opening second half possession at their own 34 yard line and managed to drive all the way to the Grove one before their third fumble of the night, recovered by Scott, left them empty.
A Ridgerunner fourth and ten fake punt situation that didnít work out placed the Tigers at the Grove 37 yard line early in the fourth quarter. Again, the Pryor offense drove down to the Grove 1 yard line and again they left with nothing as the Ridgerunner defense put up a classic goal line stand.
The Tiger defense was able to add some consolation by notching up a safety on the ensuing Ridgerunner drive thus making the 22-8 final score.
The Grove JV team returns to Ridgerunner Stadium this Monday in a face off against the Vinita Hornets JV team. Kickoff is slated for 6:30 PM.
CORRECTION: The Monday article on the Sports page concerning the Grove/McLain football game misidentified the Ridgerunner responsible for blocking the Titan PAT. That student athlete was Trent Phillips, #27 in your program. He also recovered a fumble in the fourth quarter. Sorry about the mix-up. -GE
