The Fairland Lady Owls softball team has begun its 2008 campaign with games against Adair, Vinita, and Commerce.

The Fairland squad dropped an 8-0 final to Adiar and an 11-1 defeat against Vinita before falling to Commerce 3-2 last Thursday.

Kourtney Kowal was the starting pitcher for Fairland against the Lady Tigers.  Kowal recorded five strikeouts against Commerce while giving up four hits in the five-inning contest.

Fairland held a 2-1 lead at the end of the first inning thanks to a two run homer by Bekky Gebhart off of Lady Tiger starter Alecia Leonard. Gebhart’s shot drove in leadoff batter Ashlee Davis who had reached base on a Commerce error.

Defense reigned for both teams in the second but in the third a Lady Owl wild pitch allowed Jaycee Knight to steal home for a run to knot the score at 2.

Commerce scored the go-ahead run at the top of the final inning when Mandy Watson hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield allowing Knight to score her second run of the game.
