SAPULPA-With the school year waning down to its final few days the Kansas High School trophy case inside the J.O. Jones Gymnasium has another state championship trophy to add to their impressive collection.  This piece of hardware was won by the Lady Comet 16-17 year old power lifting team at the statewide meet held in Sapulpa during the first week in May.

And while the Lady Comet team was busy racking up their 10th state championship in as many years, some individual team members were making their way into the record book.  Coached by veteran Jon Hanna, this year’s award winners consisted of four sophomores and a seventh grader.  Competing in the 181 lbs division, Barbara Helton broke the state records in the bench and total lift categories. Fellow 10th grader Haley Bird was crowned state champion in the 123 lbs division in addition to garnering the meet’s outstanding bencher and lifter award.  Rounding out the class of 2012’s plaudits were Kyrston Dozier, 114 lbs. division state champion in the bench category and Taylor Goedecke who took the title of outstanding dead lift in the 105 lbs division.  Seventh grader Kinsay Hayes was named state champ of the 105 lbs division in the 12-13 year old competition.

These Lady Comets, who work with Hanna at least twice a week, are now qualified to compete in July’s Teen Age National Power Lifting Championship, which will also be held in Sapulpa.
