JAY - It was a night of missed opportunities for the Jay Lady Bulldogs.

After falling behind 13-1 to the third-ranked Vinita Lady Hornets after the first five minutes of Tuesday's game at Bulldog Arena, the Lady Bulldogs missed out on several opportunities to pull off the upset.

Jay (13-8) rallied to within two at 20-18 in the second quarter, but after missing on several opportunities to tie or take the lead, the Lady Bulldogs allowed Vinita (19-3) to close the half with a 6-0 run.

The Lady Bulldogs would draw closer in the third quarter, holding Vinita to just eight points in the period. Jay still trailed 42-38 with three minutes to play, but Megan Ritter would score three of her team-high 19 on a drive to the basket and a free throw to make it a one-point game.

The two teams would trade free throws, and the lead, several times over the final two minutes. After Jay briefly grabbed a 45-44 lead on a fast break layup by Laura Whiteley, Vinita's Caitlyn Spurgeon sank two from the line with 1:30 left.

Ritter then countered with a pair of her own to give Jay the lead back with 36 seconds left.

Jay had the chance to seal the game after rebounding a Spurgeon miss on the ensuing possession, but after being trapped in the backcourt, the Lady Bulldogs were eventually called for a ten-second violation.

Vinita would tie the game on a free throw, and after a Jay miss, a foul was called on Whiteley on the rebound, giving the Lady Hornets a pair of free throws with 3.8 seconds left for the win.

Spurgeon led all scorers with 20 points.

Chloe Price added nine points for Jay, while Whiteley finished with eight.

The loss was the second in the last 10 games for the Lady Bulldogs.

Vinita 60, Jay 38 (boys)

Even without Jake Bullard, who is out with a broken hand, the Vinita Hornets were too much for the Jay Bulldogs in the boys contest.

Jake Roach sank three 3's in the opening period as the Hornets (19-3) blitzed the Bulldogs 25-10.

Nash Chamberlain would eventually take over the scoring duties for the third-ranked Hornets, leading all players with 20 points. The Hornets led 31-15 at the half and 46-26 after three quarters.

Roach finished with 11 for Vinita.

Jared Sloan led Jay (12-9) with 12 points.
