GREEN COUNTRY- Several local high schools participated in regional track meets across the area with berths in next week’s state tournament on the line. The top three medalists in each event qualified for the state meets.
The Oaks Warriors traveled to Catoosa for their Class A Regional meet. The Warriors finished fifth overall in the team standings with 48 points while qualifying athletes for the state tournament in five events, highlighted by Jerry Snell’s two gold medals in the 110 and 300 meter hurdles. Colby Marler qualified in three events, finishing third in both the 100 and 200 meters and winning the long jump.
Jay’s boys and girls squads both finished in fifth place at their 4A Regional in Vinita. The Lady Bulldogs had two qualifiers for state while the Bulldogs finished with three. Talisa Budder led the way for the girls with a third place finish in the 1600m and a second place in the 3200m. She also finished fourth in the 800m.
Lindsay Hobbs also qualified for two events with third place finishes in both the shot and the discus. Emalea Hudgens finished fourth in the discus and Megan Ritter finished fourth in the pole vault for Jay.
The boys’ squad was led by double-gold medalist Tyler Payton, who won both the 400m and the 800m. Luke Smith also qualified for state with a third place finish in the 1600. Levi Longan rounded out the Bulldog qualifiers with a second place in the pole vault.
Wagoner and Vinita finished first and second in both the boys’ and girls’ meets.
The Kansas and Colcord teams traveled to Pawhuska for their Regionals. The Kansas girls’ squad had one medalist in Brittney Nipps, who finished fourth in the 1600m and fifth in the 800m.
The Colcord Lady Hornets had state qualifiers in three events. The team of Teresa Ketkeo, Brooke Prater, Shelly Swicegood and Emily Farris finished third in the 4x200m relay. That same team finished fourth in the 4x400m relay while Prater, Swicegood, Farris and Haley Eason finished fourth in the 4x100m relay. Courtney Nichols qualified for both the shot put and the discus, finishing third in both events.
The Kansas boys’ squad qualified in one event as Dylan Duncan, Tyler Lankston, Wade Lewis and Shawn Turtle combined to finish second in the 4x100m relay.
The Colcord Hornets had two qualifiers for state in Canaan Sherrell and Preston Walker. Sherrell won the 300m hurdles and finished third in the high jump. Walker finished second in the discus.
The state track meet for Class 4A and 3A will be held at Ardmore High School while the Class 2A and A meet will be held at Putnam City High School. Both meets will begin on Friday, May 7 and continue through Saturday, May 8.
