GROVE – After staying close for one half, the Lady Ridgerunners could not keep up with Claremore’s Carly Cook in the second half, falling 7-1 in their home opener. Cook had four goals, all in the second half, after the Lady Zebras (1-1) took a 1-0 lead into halftime. The diminutive freshman used her speed and agility to run through the Grove defense all game as she scored three goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half alone. Cook scored less than one minute into the second half, working the ball through the middle of the field with fellow freshman Katelin Teeter before lining a shot into the right corner of the net for a 2-0 lead. Claremore would up its lead to 7-0 before Grove’s Blair Thomas put one in from 25 yards to get the Lady Ridgerunners on the board. Unfortunately, it was the Lady Zebras who dominated the ball most of the night, getting eight shots on goal to Grove’s one in the first half. The stellar play of sophomore goalkeeper Morgan Knox kept the Lady Ridgerunners in the game in the first half. Knox finished the night with 12 saves. Claremore 3, Grove 1 The sixth-ranked Zebras scored less than a minute into the game, one of three first half goals for 5-0 Claremore in a 3-1 win. The Ridgerunners (0-5) got a goal in the second half to stay in the game, only the third of the season allowed by the Zebras, but could get no closer. The Grove soccer teams will be back in action Thursday when they host Verdigris. The girls game will begin at 5 p.m. with the boys kicking off at approximately seven.
