The Grand Lake Y introducing pickleball

The Grand Lake Y along with the Independent Baptist Church is excited to offer free lessons on the exciting sport of Pickleball, or if you already play pickleball you can come and play and meet new players.  The Independent Baptist Gymnasium will be open for lessons or play from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. on Tuesdays and from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. Saturdays.  The gymnasium is located at 11th and Grand.  For a great time, exercise and to learn a fun new sport that the whole family can participate in please join us on one of those days.  You only need to dress in athletic clothing and wear tennis shoes we have all of the equipment, if you already have Pickleball equipment feel free to bring yours to use.  The great thing about Pickleball is that it can be played by all ages and is a great family activity, and is one of the fastest growing sports in the USA.  The Y hopes to develop enough players to start a competitive league and offer tournaments in the future, but we really want to give people a different activity to maintain or get into shape.

What is Pickleball:

Pickleball is a paddle sport played on a scaled down size tennis court, utilizing wooden paddles and a plastic wiffleball, and is played in either singles or doubles format.  The sport has been around since the early 1960’s but has really taken off in the last 10 years, and has been included in many schools PE curriculum.

Last year over 700 people participated in Pickleball at the Oklahoma Sooner State games.

You can check out the sport by going to this Internet address: www.usapa.org/whatis_pball/video_promo.html.
