An extremely young and short-handed Jay Bulldog team got an outstanding, complete game pitching performance and overcame some late inning errors to defeat Locust Grove at Trollinger-Haggard Field, Monday night, in the opening round of the summer league post-season tournament.
Winning pitcher, Travis Corporon scattered three hits, allowed only one earned run and struck out 10 Pirates, while going the distance for the Bulldogs.
After holding Locust Grove scoreless in the first, Jay’s Seth Hudson was struck by a pitch and advanced to third on Corporon’s double.
Hudson scored on Gage Foreman’s sacrifice and Corporon crossed the plate on the first of three hits by catcher Ty Moore.
The Bulldogs picked up three more in the bottom of the third. Casey Loomis led off the frame with a single and moved up 90 feet on a stolen base. Hudson sent Loomis home with a double in the gap and came into score when the Pirates committed their first of two errors in the game, on Corporon’s hard hit ground ball.
Corporon posted the ’Dogs fifth run on Moore’s second RBI hit.
Following a scoreless fourth inning, Locust Grove picked up a run when Alex Humphries led off the top of the fifth with a single.
The first of two Jay infield errors plated Humphries and Chris Jones. But any further damage was prevented when Loomis made a catch suitable for any highlight reel. In ’ Jim Edmondesque’ fashion, the gifted athlete turned his back to the infield, raced toward the centerfield wall and hauled in the long fly ball with a spectacular diving catch.
Inspired by the defensive heroics, the Bulldogs scored three more insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth. Hudson led off the rally with his second extra base hit of the game. He advanced to third on a wild pitch and subsequently scored on a passed ball.
Foreman and Moore followed with a single and a double, respectively. Foreman scored on Jesse Scott’s sacrifice and Moore came home on a single by Matt Henderson.
With another pair of errors, the Bulldog defense allowed their guests to score another unearned run. But Corporon remained cool and struck out the Pirate side for the complete game 8-3 final.
