The GHS boys’ varsity soccer team opened their ’09 season Tuesday night with an 8-1 loss at Miami.

The Wardogs rushed out to a 6-1 lead by halftime. Grove found their rhythm in the second half according to GHS Soccer Head Coach Sean Botts.

“We came out flat and made some mistakes that they capitalized on,” Botts said. “We panicked a little bit in the first half and rushed a lot of passes on offense.

“We calmed down in the second half and played a lot better,” Botts added.

Grove scored their lone goal of the night on a penalty kick by sophomore Dillon Boydston.

“I liked what I saw from us in the last 55 minutes or so of the game,” Botts said. “The kids kept fighting all night. We’re disappointed with the result but we’ll build up from here. The kids have a good resolve to improve for the rest of the season.”

Both the girls and boys soccer teams will be hosting Westville Monday night at Ridgerunner Stadium. The Lady Ridgerunners are set to begin their game at 5:00 PM with the Ridgerunners contest to follow.
