COLLINSVILLE – A goal by Oscar Flores with 51 seconds left gave the Grove Ridgerunners a 3-2 win over Skiatook on Friday night and put the Ridgerunners squarely in the playoff picture.
Flores’ goal came on an assist from fellow forward Gabe Rodriguez and came less than a minute after the Bulldogs had tied the game at two with a goal of their own.
The Bulldogs, undefeated in District 5A-4 play before Friday’s loss, took the lead 12 minutes into the game, but Rodriguez tied the score with 23 minutes left in the first half.
Flores broke the tie with a goal with 19 minutes left in the game on another assist from Rodriguez.
The Ridgerunners (4-7, 2-3 in district) won despite only getting four shots in the second half. Goalkeeper Tyler Troppman had 16 saves on the night for the Ridgerunners, who won for the fourth time in their last six games.
With wins in their final two games, the Ridgerunners could finish as high as third in the district. The top four in the district qualify for the playoffs. Grove will host Collinsville tonight before traveling to Pryor to finish out the regular season on Thursday. The Ridgerunners began the season with five straight losses.
“The kids are playing a lot better,” head coach Sean Botts said. “We have a lot more confidence. I never thought we’d be in this position after starting 0-5.”
The girls team lost to the Lady Bulldogs 4-0 on Friday. No other information was available.
