The Fairland Owls baseball team improved their record to 4-0 last week with wins over Quapaw on Thursday and Wyandotte on Friday.
A scheduled battle with Miami for Saturday was called on account of poor weather conditions.
The Owls return to the diamond this Wednesday as they begin play in the Ketchum tournament.
Thursday afternoon the Owls hosted Quapaw and prevailed with a 14-2 score in five innings of play.
Casey Robertson went the distance on the mound for the Owls. Robertson faced 24 batters Thursday and recorded seven strikeouts, giving up six hits and three walks.
The Owls put up two runs in the first inning to take the early lead Thursday against Quapaw. Cale Shumaker scored a run off a Yancey Lett double. Lett then scored off of a Quapaw error on a single by Robertson.
A big second inning saw Fairland put up eight more runs off of five hits to go up 10-0. The inning began with Brett Blalock walking to first before Reid Vanhoose singled. Blake Robertson then made it to first on a Quapaw error allowing Blalock to score a run. Seth Bunce then hit a single to load the bases for the Owls. Schumaker was the next batter and he received a walk allowing for Vanhoose to score a run to put Fairland up 4-0 and keep the bases loaded. Stevie Nowlin then hit a single driving in Robertson and Bunce to put Fairland up 6-0. Lett then produced a single and drove in Shumaker. Sacrifice fly’s by Robertson and Blalock produced two more Fairland runs and Robertson recorded another RBI at the end of the inning driving Jordan Alexander home.
The Owls piled on three more runs in the third and added another in the fourth.
Quapaw put up two runs off of two hits in the fourth to get on the scoreboard.
Bunce went 3 for 3 on Thursday against Quapaw with two singles and a double. Bunce had 1 RBI and a run and a walk.
Shumaker went 0 for 1 with a walk and three runs. Shumaker made it to base twice by fielder’s choice.
Nowlin went 1 for 2 Thursday with 2 RBI’s and 2 runs.
Lett went 2 for 3 with 3 RBI’s and 3 runs.
Pitcher Robertson went 1 for 1 with a single and 3 RBI’s.
Blake Robertson went 2 for 2 with 2 RBI’s and a run.
Friday’s game with Wyandotte proved to be a wild one with the Owls prevailing 18-11 at home.
Nowlin got the win for the Owls. The pitcher struck out three batters and walked one while giving up eight hits and six runs.
Lett came in to record the save and put in four strikeouts and one walk. Lett gave up three hits and two earned runs.
“Thank goodness we were hitting the ball against Wyandotte,” Owls Head Coach Jerry Johnson said. “It really got wild there in the last two innings.”
“Stevie (Nowlin) pitched a very good game,” said the coach. “Yancey (Lett) came in and did well to hold onto the lead. We kept getting behind in every count in the sixth and Wyandotte started coming back to make it interesting.”
