MUSKOGEE - For three quarters the Grove Ridgerunners appeared to be well on their way to picking up their fourth win in six tries to open the season. But then they couldn't do what they've hung their hats on this season. They couldn't come up with a defensive stop.
Trailing 34-26 heading into the fourth quarter, the Hilldale Hornets scored 21 points over the final eight minutes to steal a 47-42 win Saturday afternoon at the Hilldale Event Center.
Bill Muse led the charge for the Hornets (6-3), hitting three three-pointers and scoring 11 points in the final stanza.
Grove (3-3) jumped into the lead after a sluggish opening quarter when Jake Spychalski got hot from the outside. Spychalski hit four threes in the first half, including three in the second quarter as the Ridgerunners turned a 7-5 deficit into a 21-12 halftime lead.
The Ridgerunners would lead by as much as 12 (30-18) with 2:49 left in the third quarter as Kyle Summerfield scored eight of his game-high 21 points in the frame.
Hilldale would get a little momentum by closing out the quarter with an 8-4 run. The Hornets then got a three from Tony Cabrera and two more from Muse to surge into a 37-36 lead with 5:39 left.
Summerfield would get the Ridgerunners back into the lead briefly, but Muse answered with another from downtown and the Hornets would not trail again, closing the game by making three-of-four from the free throw line.
In addition to his offensive output, Summerfield had eight rebounds. Spychalski finished with 14 points.
Muse led Hilldale with 14, while Cabrera and Tyler Harrison had 10 each.
On Friday night the Ridgerunners also lost at home to Vinita 61-33. Summerfield scored 13 to lead the Ridgerunners in the loss.
Vinita, which led 34-10 at the break, got 16 from Jake Roach and 14 from Garret Maxley.
Grove 50, Hilldale 28 (girls)
After losing a physical overtime contest Friday night to Vinita 48-46, the Lady Ridgerunners were understandably sluggish on Saturday afternoon against a Hilldale squad they had dominated in a 44-22 beatdown in the semifinals of the Hilldale Tournament.
The result was a game that was tied at 18 at halftime.
That changed in the third quarter, as the Lady Ridgerunners got their offense in order and blew out the Lady Hornets for the second time this season.
Getting seven points from Kat Johnson in the quarter, Grove (5-1) got contributions from three other players in doubling their score.
The Lady Hornets, meanwhile, could only get 10 points total over the final two periods.
Taylor Dodson finished with 16 points, two rebounds and three assists. Mason Jeffries contributed another double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Johnson added nine points.
Jeffries had 20 points to lead the Lady Ridgerunners in the loss to second-ranked Vinita on Friday. Johnson added 11. Caitlyn Spurgeon led the Lady Hornets with 18 points.
