Freshman runner Ryan Wheatley highlighted a strong effort by both Grove track teams at the Girard (Kansas) Invitational last Friday with a school record in the 800 meters.
Wheatley crossed the line in 2:02, winning the event and leading several medalists for the Ridgerunners.
Wheatley teamed with Brody Scott, Cameron Smith and Shawn Fernandez to finish third in the 1600m relay. Scott also won the 110m high hurdles and finished seventh in the 300m hurdles. Smith and Chad Rainbolt also competed in the 400m dash, winning fifth and eighth respectively.
In the field events for the Ridgerunners Zach Housely placed third in the pole vault with a jump of 12 feet, while Sean Hayward placed fourth in the discus. Josh Friend rounded out the medalists for the boys with a fourth place finish in the shot put.
The girls’ team also rallied behind a record-setting effort to finish second behind Joplin, Missouri in the team standings.
The relay team of seniors Peri Lane and Tessa Robertson, along with junior Blair Thomas and sophomore Caitlin Bales set a meet record in the mile relay. Robertson and Lane also teamed up with Bales and senior Alyssa Ortner to take first place in the 400m relay. The Lady Ridgerunner team of Peri Lane, Ashley Trammel, Courtney
Medeiros, and Blair Thomas ran their fastest time of the season in the 3200m relay placing second behind Carthage, Missouri.
In individual events the Lady Ridgerunners were led by Robertson who won both the 100 and 300m hurdles. Caitlin Bales also brought home a pair of individual medals, winning gold in the 100m dash and claiming silver in the 200 meters.
Alyssa Ortner also medaled in the 100 meters, claiming third place while senior Peri Lane finished third in the 300m hurdles. Ashley Trammel rounded out the track medals with a sixth place finish in the mile run.
In the field events ophomore Kat Johnson placed fifth in the shot put and third in the discus, while Johnnie Keene also placed in the discus, finishing fifth.
Both Ridgerunner teams will at the Regional Track meet at Skiatook on Saturday, May 8th.
