VINITA – The same problem that has plagued the Grove Lady Ridgerunners – turnovers – reared its ugly head again on Tuesday night. The Lady Ridgerunners turned the ball over 31 times in losing to the Vinita Lady Hornets 63-42, their second loss to VHS on the season. The Lady Hornets, ranked third in Class 4A, defeated Grove 63-43 in December. Grove (6-7) led 10-8 with 2:35 left in the opening quarter behind four points each from Mason Jeffries and Kenzie Miller. But Vinita (15-1) would go on a 14-3 run over the next six minutes of the game, taking a 22-13 lead with 5:43 left in the second quarter. Vinita would not trail again in the game. As in the first meeting, the Lady Hornets got plenty of points from behind the three-point line. Kelly Chamberlain nailed two from beyond the arc in the first quarter, while Morgan Grammer and Tiffany Steinhoff added one each as Vinita took a 29-21 halftime lead. Jeffries carried the Grove offense in the first half with 10 points and six rebounds, but her fourth foul less than 30 seconds into the second half put her on the bench for the rest of the game. The foul was also ruled to be intentional, one of several questionable calls against both teams in the game. Steinhoff made three of the four subsequent free throws to establish a 32-21 lead. The Lady Ridgerunners would get no closer for the rest of the night. Vinita would extend its lead to 44-28 by the end of the third period. Chamberlain would add another three in the third period, then two more in the fourth to finish with a game-high 19 points. Caitlin Spurgeon scored 11 of her 17 in the first half for the Lady Hornets, who will take on Locust Grove on Friday. Amanda Cook scored nine of her 10 points in the second half for Grove, including six of the Lady Ridgerunners’ seven third quarter points, while Miller finished with eight points and five rebounds. The Lady Ridgerunners will travel to Jay to take on the Lady Bulldogs on Friday.   Vinita 63, Grove 42                1st           2nd          3rd          4th           Final VHS       18           11           15           19           63 GHS       12           9             7             14           42   VHS: Chamberlain 19, Spurgeon 17, Steinhoff 8, Straw 7, Grammer 7, Gibson 3, Markham 1 GHS: Jeffries 10, A.
