The Fairland Lady Owls softball team collected two wins over the weekend with Fairland defeating Quapaw 8-0 and following that up with a 3-0 victory over the Afton Lady Eagles in Saturday double feature play.

Kortney Kowal earned the win for both contests. Against the Lady Wildcats Kowal recorded six strikeouts after facing 18 batters in five innings. In the Afton feature the Fairland pitcher put up seven strikeouts in six innings after facing 20 batters.

Fairland jumped out to a quick lead over Quapaw when a triple from Kowal sent leadoff batter Ashlee Davis across the plate in the first. Kowal reached home later in the inning off a sacrifice from teammate Courtney Summers.

The Lady Owls scored runs again in the third inning when a single by Bekky Gebhart plated Kowal, who had reached base on a walk.

A five run, five hit offensive side in the fourth saw Fairland pull away convincingly. The Lady ‘Cats did themselves no favors in the inning by posting two errors and three wild pitches.

Singles by Katie Schubert and Kowal, combined with some nimble base stealing by the pair, set the stage for runs via a throwing error by the Quapaw catcher, for Schubert, and a wild pitch, for Kowal.

Later in the inning Kowal hit a single that scored Emily Shelton. A shot by Bekky Gebhart scored Kowal and during the at-bat Ashlee Davis, who had been walked, stole home on a Lady ‘Cat wild pitch to throw another log on the fire.

Against Quapaw Kowal went 3 for 4 at the plate with a triple, 2 RBI’s, and 4 runs.

Gebhart finished 2 for 3 against the Lady ‘Cats with 2 RBI’s.

Staying in their native Lucky Seven Conference the Lady Owls squared off with long-time rival Afton later in the afternoon.

Defense reigned for both squads in the opening inning but in the bottom of the second a single by Jessica Blalock and an RBI by Kowal conspired to push Fairland ahead by one.

Fourth inning singles from Katie Hutchison and Schubert set the table for Kowal and the Fairland ace delivered a double that sent both of her teammates home.

It amounted to all of the scoring in the game but it was more than enough for the Lady Owls to collect their second win of the day.

Against Fairland, Lady Eagle starter Jakey Dobbs faced 22 batters in six innings giving up eight hits and collecting three strikeouts.

Kowal finished 2 for 4 against Afton with 3 RBI’s and a double.

Schubert went 2 for 2 with a run while Blalock and Hutchison each went 2 for 3 with a run.

For the Lady Eagles Saturday, Ashley Carroll went 1 for 3 while Chelsea Turner finished at 1 for 2.
