GROVE- The first annual Disabled American Veterans Amateur Golf Tournament was held on June 7 at the Patricia Island Golf Club. Sponsored by the Bank of Grove, the tournament happened as scheduled in spite of some rainy weather.

The teams were divided into two flights. Winning the first flight was the team of Otis Winters, Vernon Brady, Chad Langley and Nick Larson, who scored a 57. Larson was also awarded for having the longest drive among the men. Second place in first flight was Ty Thurman, Lloyd Messimore, and Mike Merrie, who combined for a score of 61.

First place in the second flight was won by the tournament’s only female group. Lynn Stewart, Ileta Bray, Candy Brasel and Barbara Smith scored a 66. The ladies were presented with a sleeve of pink golf balls from the Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation. Brasel was also awarded for the longest drive among the women. Second place in the second flight was won by the team of Chuck Bullock, Tom Logue, Art Pinsart and Bob Ott with a score of 69.

All last place finishers received ten dollars toward the purchase of a crying towel.

DAV Chapter 19 Commander Harold Smith deemed the tournament a success. Proceeds from the tournament will go towards the purchase of a new van to provide transportation to all veterans.
