MUSKOGEE - The way they came out firing on all cylinders in the first quarter of their 52-36 win over Checotah in the opening round of the Hilldale Tournament Thursday, one would never guess the Grove Lady Ridgerunners were playing in their first game of the 2011-12 season.

Over the next three quarters it was easy to figure that out.

Fortunately, the Lady Ridgerunners were able to use their defense and rebounding to hold off the Lady Wildcats with relative ease and advance to tonight's semifinals.

Grove will face Hilldale, a 39-38 winner over Vian, at 7 p.m. tonight.

The Lady Ridgerunners shot out of the gate, burying three 3's in jumping out to a 24-8 lead after the first eight minutes of the game.

Guard Amanda Cook led the way with a pair of shots from beyond the arc as she scored nine points in the opening period and Emily Iverson added five points.

Turnovers and poor shooting in the second quarter allowed the Lady Wildcats (1-3) to make their only real run of the game. After a steal and layup by Mason Jeffries put Grove ahead 26-10 with just under five minutes left in the first half, Checotah, sparked by three consecutive Grove turnovers, went on an 11-2 run to cut the lead to 28-21 with 2:40 left in the period.

The Lady Ridgerunners, who committed seven of their 22 turnovers during the second quarter, were able to right the ship with a couple of baskets by Jeffries to take a 34-23 lead into the break.

Grove would clamp down defensively in the second half, limiting the Lady Wildcats to six points in the third quarter and seven more in the fourth while forcing 20 turnovers over the final 16 minutes. The Lady Ridgerunners would lead by as much as 20 in the fourth quarter.

Jeffries, who left the game in the fourth quarter after suffering a large gash over her left eye, led the Lady Ridgerunners with 14 points. Taylor Dodson finished with 11 points.

Taylor Garrett led Checotah with seven points. The Lady Wildcats, who committed 35 turnovers on the night, will face Vian in the consolation round tonight.

Led by Demetri Martin's 24 points, the Wildcats spoiled the debut of Ridgerunner head coach Zach Trimble to advance to the semifinals.

The Ridgerunners, plagued by poor shooting throughout the game, trailed 15-6 after the first quarter as Martin hit three consecutive shots from behind the arc to give Checotah the early lead. Martin scored 11 points in the first eight minutes of the contest.

Checotah, who will play Hilldale in tonight's semifinal, would lead 28-12 at the half. Dakota Daniels scored nine of his 11 points in the first half.

Grove was led by senior Kyle Summerfield, who scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds. The Ridgerunners will play Vian at 5:30 today in a consolation game.
