SOUTH COFFEYVILLE- Overcoming a sluggish start, the Afton Eagles got three touchdown passes from quarterback Brennon Fuser as they rolled over the Oklahoma Union Cougars 33-7 to remain undefeated.
The Eagles racked up 424 total yards of offense, including 144 yards on the ground in the second half alone as they pulled away after leading 12-7 at halftime.
But it was the Cougars (3-5) who came out punching. With sophomore quarterback Channing Williams running the option to perfection, the Cougars gashed the Eagle defense for 117 rushing yards in the first half, with Dylan Kipps bashing the ball in from the one-yard line early in the second quarter for a 7-0 lead.
The Eagles finally got their offense going in with 7:25 left in the half, having to that point as many turnovers (one), as first downs. Fuser got the Eagles rolling with a 13-yard pass followed by passes to Jacob Mustain and Dusty Henry that covered 11 and 23 yards. Fuser then found a sliding Henry in the endzone with a 12-yard pass to get the Eagles on the board. A blocked extra point made the score 7-6.
Afton would erase the deficit for good on their next possession. After a short punt and a 22-yard return by Henry, the Eagles took over on the Cougar 26. The Eagles ground the ball toward the goal line in eight plays, with Henry finishing the drive with a two-yard run with 14 seconds left in the half for a 12-7 lead.
The Eagles then took the second half kickoff and put the game away for good. Mixing runs and passes, the Eagles covered 55 yards in eight crisp plays with Fuser sneaking in from the one for the touchdown. Henry then ran for the two-point conversion to make it 20-7.
The Eagles would score again early in the fourth. Starting at their own 19, Afton got running back Matt Wisdom involved. After gaining just 12 yards in the first half, Wisdom would add 95 more in the second, including two 11-yard runs sandwiched around a 10-yard pass from Fuser to Henry to move the ball quickly out to the 40. Six plays later Fuser found Sam Shepard on a post route for a 31-yard touchdown.
Fuser would find Shepard again for a 21-yard touchdown pass later in the fourth quarter. The extra point by Mustain would cap the scoring at 33-7.
Fuser would finish with 224 yards passing and 50 yards rushing. Henry finished with four catches for 48 yards and a touchdown, 24 yards on five rushing attempts and another touchdown, as well as an interception. The Afton defense limited the Cougars to just 15 yards rushing in the second half and 187 total yards for the game. Williams finished with 112 yards rushing to lead the Cougars.
Next week the Eagles will host the Porter Pirates in their final District A-8 contest before finishing the regular season on November 5 against Yale.
