In less than two weeks, football players will lace up their shoes and step out onto the field - ready to be coached by Ken Heupel and his team.

Heupel will bring his one-day "Day of Champions" camp to the Grove Sports Complex on Monday, July 8.

The event, which goes from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., is geared for students ages 8 to 18. It is designed to not only teach the basics of the game of football, but also different aspects of a child's well-being, including nutritional instruction.

The camp costs $50, and includes instruction from Heupel's team of current and former college and NFL coaches and players, water and lunch, a t-shirt and a photo and autograph opportunities.

Steve Serage, vice president for the Grove Youth Football Association, hold a registration event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 29, at the Sports Locker, 1000 S. Main St., Grove.

Serange said parents can register their students on the day of the event, beginning at 7:30 a.m., however pre-registration is encouraged so organizers can prepare for the camp. The camp will begin promptly at 8 a.m.

Heupel is the former head coach of Northern State University in South Dakota and the father of former OU quarterback Josh Heupel.

Heupel began the camps after a 27-year coaching career, most of it at the small-college level. Now a resident of Muskogee, Heupel has run the Day of Champion camps for eight years, focusing not just on football fundamentals but also on the four values of discipline, respect, trust and hard work.

Heupel’s staff consists of coaches from all levels of college coaching who will focus on football fundamentals.

“This is a teaching camp,” Heupel said. “It’s not a conditioning camp. The coaches are outstanding.”
