The Jay Bulldogs will celebrate Homecoming this Friday at J.B. Earp Stadium in a district showdown with rival the Vinita Hornets.

The Bulldogs have put together a 2-1 record so far this season. The team opened play with a 46-14 home win over Clarksville (AR) before dropping a 31-28 heartbreaker at home to the Miami Wardogs.

Last week the Jay troops rebounded with a convincing 31-7 win at Pryor.

The Bulldogs’ first three opponents have a combined record of 3-7. Friday night Jay will be facing a 2-1 Hornet club that currently holds a #13 ranking in Class 4A.

Quarterback Brandon Edge leads the balanced Jay offensive attack. The sophomore has thrown seven touchdown passes so far this season and rushed for another three.

Bubba Baker is the leading rusher for Jay with 193 yards accumulated thus far. Baker has five touchdowns on the season.

The Bulldog receiving corps features a diverse array of weapons as four receivers- Casey Loomis, John Davenport, Cayle Shambaugh, and John Ramsey- having pulled in touchdown passes.

Shambaugh has been a leader on the defensive side of the ball, as well. He is the team leader in tackles and has also pulled in an interception.

Dakota Hogshooter, Josh McElwee, and Delmo Crouch are among the leading tacklers for the Bulldog defense.

Ramsey is the sack leader of the bunch with three and teammate Jerald Tate has notched up two so far this year.

Friday’s event will mark the third consecutive road trip for the Hornets. Last week the school downed Dewey 19-13 after dropping a 24-17 decision at Nowata. The Hornets opened their season with a 33-14 win at home over Pryor.

The Hornets first three opponents have a combined 5-4 record.

Vinita has a powerful one-two punch in their offensive backfield with Colton Thiems and Durwuan Roberts.

Thiems is averaging over six yards a carry and has piled up 341 yards thus far with four touchdowns.

Roberts has 338 yards on 43 carries, making for a seven yard average, with three touchdowns.

Scott Mattison and Adam Ramsey lead the defensive front for Vinita with 24 and 25 tackles, respectively. Karry Daggs has compiled 14 tackles.

Kickoff Friday is set for 7:30 PM with Homecoming activities taking place at halftime. Each team will be looking to get their district season started on the right foot and the contest should prove quite entertaining as the teams look evenly matched on paper.
