GROVE - In their final home match of the season, the Grove Ridgerunners used six forfeits and five falls to stampede the Inola Longhorns 66-12 Monday night.

The match was Senior Night and Homecoming for the wrestlers, as they sent off seniors Bryce Armstrong, Spencer Rutherford, Jimmy Roach and Levi Wangen in style. All four wrestlers came out winners on Monday, with Rutherford and Armstrong winning by fall and Roach and Wangen getting forfeits.

John Kennedy got the Ridgerunners started with a pin of Inola’s Cyle Jolley in the second period in the 112-pound bout. The pin, coming on the heels of Inola’s forfeit in the 103-pound class, put Grove up 12-0.

The Longhorns would get the first of their three wins in the best bout of the night at 119 pounds between Grove’s Tanner Ligon and Inola’s Dillon Chapman.

After a scoreless opening period it was Chapman who used a penalty point and an escape for a 2-0 lead. But Ligon would come back with a five point move and would eventually lead 6-4 heading into the final period. Ligon was still up 8-6 late in the match when Chapman used a takedown and three near-fall points in the final 30 seconds of the match to pull off the 11-8 comeback win.

The Longhorns then got their only fall of the night when 2010 state runner-up Cory Vann pinned Grove’s Josh Popp midway through the second period.

The Ridgerunners would respond with wins in the next seven weight classes to take a commanding 54-9 lead with Rutherford, Armstrong and sophomore Benny Steffenson all getting pins.

Inola’s Jake Barrett then won a 6-1 decision over Blake Clodfelter at 189 pounds. After a forfeit by Inola at 215 pounds, heavyweight Josh Friend put the exclamation point on the night with a second period fall over Zack Santos.

The Ridgerunners will wrestle again this weekend when they travel to the Coweta Tournament.
