GROVE – A huge day by Grove’s Bryce Davenport on the mound and at the plate led the Ridgerunners to their fifth win in the last six games with a 9-0 run-rule victory over Vinita. Davenport went three-for-three at the plate with a pair of doubles and three runs batted in while allowing the Hornets just five hits while striking out six in five innings. Davenport got things started for the Ridgerunners in the bottom of the first inning, hitting a two-out double to left centerfield. Pinch runner Bryce Armstrong would advance to third and then would score on a pair of wild pitches for Grove’s first run of the game. After a walk issued to Trent Phillips, first baseman Gibson Russ lined a single to right field to score Phillips. T.J. Stephens would reach on an infield single and Adam Steffenson would be hit by a pitch to load the bases. Kyle Summerfield then delivered the next big blow, a two-run single to left field that scored Russ and Stephens and put the Ridgerunners up 4-0 after the first inning. Davenport would provide more offense in the second inning. After Buck Maples led off the inning with a double to the left centerfield gap, Davenport followed with his second double of the game to put Grove up 5-0. Davenport would then help put the game away in the third inning. After a pair of singles and a pair of fielder’s choices, a walk to Maples loaded the bases with two outs. Another walk issued to Zac Knox would score Steffenson before Davenport lined a single to centerfield for a pair of RBIs and an 8-0 lead for the Ridgerunners. Meanwhile, Davenport held the Hornets’ bats in check. After allowing a pair of two-out singles in the first inning, Davenport allowed just three more hits over the final three innings of the game, not allowing a runner past second base. After the Ridgerunners scored another run in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a pair of Vinita errors, Davenport put the game away in the top of the fifth, striking out Cameron Parnell for the final out of the run-rule shortened game. The Ridgerunners, now 6-6 on the season, will travel to Wagoner today to take on the Bulldogs at 5 p.m.
