After rolling up nearly 500 yards of offense in the first half alone, Colcord blew away Westville Friday night in the opening 2A-8 conference tilt at Hornet Stadium.

And while the offense was rolling up huge numbers, the Hornet defense was busy dominating the line of scrimmage.

After receiving the opening kick deep in their own territory, Colcord picked up a big first down on a 16 yard Canaan Sherrell (12 of 17 for 246 yards) to Jordan Cowan pass.

But it looked as if the Hornets might be having ‘another one of those games’ when they coughed up the football into the visitor’s hands.

The Colcord defense had other things in mind, however.

With a huge rush on a couple of pass attempts and some stifling line play, the Hornet defense force the Yellow Jacket offense to turn the ball over on downs at their own 30.

And the Colcord offense went to work grinding out 70 yards on 12 snaps and burning over half of the first quarter clock.

Featuring a big 15-yard run by Ethan Shelley and a 20-yard Sherrell to Shelley pass, the Hornets marched 65 yards, where Chris Aguilar scored his first of three touchdowns in the game. Shelley’s successful PAT gave the home team a 7-0.

And things stayed in the Hornets corner for the remainder of the game.

Despite picking up their first first down on a 15 yard penalty, Westville had to yield the ball back to the Hornets after a short possession.

And Colcord went on another impressive drive. On the heels of a 50 yard rush by Darwin Davis (9 carries for 88 yards) the Hornets eventually found themselves facing a fourth down on the visitor’s 15.

Sherrell’s 11 yard toss to Dakota Place kept the series alive.

Burning up the remainder of the first period, Colcord scored on the opening play of the second when Sherrell called his own number with a two-yard TD run.

After another relentless defensive stand, the Hornets took control of the football again, this time on the Jacket 32.

And two snaps later Sherrell connected with receiver Caleb Backwater in stride for a spectacular 56-yard TD combination. The PAT kick was no good, but everything else was going in favor of Colcord, 20-0.

The Hornet ’black shirts’ continued to dominate their guest by forcing them to turn the ball over on downs, yet again.

With no need to put the ball in the air, Sherrell (14 touches for 115 yards) was able to pick up three first downs and 55 yards on his next three carries.

And with 2:01 to play in the half, Aguilar scored his second TD.

Again the Colcord defense punished Westville and forced them to relinquish the ball once more.

And the Hornets responded when Chris Van Dyke hauled in a Sherrell pass near midfield and powered his way to pay dirt for a 65 yard score with only three seconds to play in the half. The PAT failed, but Colcord was firmly in control 33-0 at the half.

In the second half, the Hornets put up their sixth and seventh unanswered touchdowns with runs of four and five yards by Shelley and Aguilar, respectively, before the end of the third quarter.

The Colcord bench finished out the contest for the impressive 46-12 district win.

The Hornets travel to Vian next week before returning to Hornet Stadium on October 9th to celebrate homecoming versus Keys.
