COLCORD – When the Colcord Hornets travel to Talihina to take on the Golden Tigers in tonight’s second round playoff game, they’ll have one thing on their minds: stopping Talihina quarterback Jordan Eagleroad.

To say that the undefeated Golden Tigers’ offense runs through Eagleroad would be an understatement. With almost 2,700 total yards of offense and 40 touchdowns on the season, Eagleroad has powered a Talihina offense that powered the Golden Tigers to an 11-0 record and a District 2A-6 title. Eagleroad’s 186 points scored leads Class 2A and his 1,875 rushing yards is sixth best in the state regardless of class.

Backing up Eagleroad is another tough runner in Kane Owens. Owens has 1,181 yards and 12 touchdowns on the season, averaging over 10 yards per carry.

On the rare occasions they decide to throw the ball, Eagleroad has targeted Chris Capsey with most of his throws. Of Eagleroad’s 44 completions on the year, 25 have gone to Caspey, covering 528 yards and resulting in six touchdowns.

The Hornets will counter with their own high-powered rushing attack that has led Colcord to six straight wins, including a 48-7 demolition of Pawhuska last week. In that game senior running back Chris Aguilar ran for 204 yards and four touchdowns, while quarterback Canaan Sherrell chipped in with 101 yards on the ground.

For the season Aguilar has 871 yards on the ground. He’ll also be one of those most responsible for stopping Eagleroad. From his linebacker position, Aguilar has 129 tackles on the season.

Although Sherrell only passed for 45 yards in last week’s lopsided win, the Hornet senior has been prolific in the passing game when required. Sherrell had 1,512 yards and 19 touchdowns through the air during the regular season, against only five interceptions. Many of those throws have found senior wideout Rusty James, who has 33 receptions for 666 yards and seven touchdowns on the year.

But with both teams emphasizing the ground game, it’s safe to assume there won’t be many balls flying through the air tonight. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30.
