Special to the Grove Sun
COLCORD - It has been some time since the Colcord Lady Hornet basketball team has had a lot to cheer about. But judging from what’s being said and what’s been seen so far this year, that long dry spell may soon be coming to an end. And with only one senior on this year’ s roster, in addition to a move to the 2A classification, the Colcord girls might just be in for a pretty good run at things…this season and beyond.
The Lady Hornets’ lone senior is 6-2 post player Courtney Nichols. But Nichols will probably be sidelined until the start of the new year with a torn ACL. That’s the bad news. The good news is that 6-2 sophomore, Kendall Spry has stepped into the middle and, judging from her recent performances, she may make it hard for Nichols to take the position back from her when the time comes.
Junior Shelly Swicegood, who led the Lady Hornets in just about every category last season, continues to just get better and better. The talented junior appears poised to guide the Colcord girls at both ends of the court. Fellow juniors, Emily Farris, Zoe Scott, Daisy Rich, and Brooklynn Prater all bring plenty of experience to the Hornet table.
Three sophomores, Jordan Pike, Tristan Sanders and Haley Eason will be vying for their share of playing time as well. Rounding out the Hornet roster are five freshmen.
Ninth graders Emily Copeland, Dava Weaver, Peyton Denny, Erin Long and Shelby Ziebarth not only represent the future of the Lady Hornet program, but in the words of head coach Mark Sherrell, “Any of these underclassmen could and probably will impact our program this season.”
The Colcord girls are endeavoring to master the Doc Sadler ‘zone transition’ offense while employing their ‘amoeba’ defense. So far, watching this year’s edition of the Lady Hornets has been an eye-opening affair. With every minute played and every trip down the floor, you can actually observe their maturation process. They are learning to think more than one step ahead; they are watching for that open teammate in their periphery, they are striving to anticipate their opponents’ primary, secondary and even tertiary moves.
For lack of a better description, watching this 2010-11 team is much like watching a child that just recently learned to walk, suddenly begin to run. Their mistakes are becoming borne less by neglect, but rather as a result of hustle. If they continue to improve exponentially, they could make a significant run past their district tournament for the first time in a while.
