VINITA- Despite Vinita‘s 200-plus rushing yards Friday night, the Jay Bulldogs stayed close enough to set up the potential game winning score in the fourth, only to have their hopes dashed by the Hornets’ third interception of the game.

In the opening quarter Vinita’s Devonta Carter (16 carries for 96 yards) put the Hornets on the scoreboard with a 10-yard touchdown run.  The PAT was no good, giving the home team a 6-0 lead.

But the Bulldogs came roaring back to score in the first stanza as well.  Jay quarterback, Brandon Edge (12 of 25 for 129 yards), connected with Kyle Shambaugh for a seven-yard TD pass.  The Bulldogs also missed their extra point attempt to deadlock the affair at 6 each.  Shambaugh would lead all receivers on the night with 7 catches for 65 yards.  Vinita quarterback, Jake Roach didn’t throw much, going 5 of 7 for 31 yards, but he was good enough to find Jarred Walker for his only reception and a seven-yard touchdown to retake the lead.  This time, Carter’s kick was good, giving the Hornets a 13-7 halftime lead.

Following the break, the two teams battled to a scoreless draw with the Vinita defense picking off an Edge pass deep in the ‘red zone’ to maintain their lead into the pivotal fourth quarter.

The Bulldogs then marched to the Hornet seven where Edge scooted across the goal line to bring his team within one.  And with his successful two-point run Edge gave Jay their first and only lead, 14-13.

But after a 22-yard kickoff return and a pair of Zach Woolman rushes for 16 and 17 yards respectively, the Hornets were knocking on the Bulldog door again. Vinita retook the lead when Wollman, who finished the game with 15 carries for 78 yards, carried the ball into the end zone from six yards away.  The PAT kick was no good again, putting Jay down by five with scant minutes to play.  And for all intents and purposes, it looked as if the ‘Dogs were going to pull this one out of the fire as they marched into enemy territory. But the Hornet defense came up with the big play they needed when Jake Roach intercepted Edge to bring the drive to an end.  Vinita was able to run out the remaining game clock to hang on for the 19-14 district win.

Jay will celebrate Homecoming, Friday night, at Jay B. Earp Field where they will play host to the #1 rated, 5-0 Wagoner Bulldogs.
