MIAMI ‹ This wasnąt the way Richard Bassett wanted the regular season to end for his Grove Lady Ridgerunners.

Managing only two points in the third quarter, GHS suffered a 40-34 loss to Miami here Monday night. “Miami outplayed us,” Bassett said. “They did what they had to do to win.

Thereąs no excuses ‹ they outplayed us.” The Lady Ridgerunners led 20-11 at the half, but Miami battled back to within six in the first four minutes of the third quarter. A conventional 3-point play by Bekah Stewart kicked off a 13-0 run by the Lady Wardogs that turned the game around. They carried a 30-24 lead into the final stanza. “We came out and executed on offense, and executed our press, which helped us a lot,” Miami coach JohnCarl Morgan said. “It got us a couple of easy buckets in transition. We went to the ball in the second half ‹ we killed them on the boards.”

Each team scored 10 points over the final eight minutes.

“The last time we played them, we fell apart at the free throw line in the fourth quarter,” Morgan said. “This time, we were 8 of 14, which is a lot better than 2 for 12 or whatever it was the last time.”

The Lady Wardogs were 14 of 23 at the line for the game. Grove converted on only 13 of 22 chances. The win was the second in three tries for Miami against the Lady Ridgerunners.

Both wins came in the Dogdome ‹ during the Northeastern A&M High School Tournament and then Tuesday, the final regular-season game in the Dogdome for Miami. It moves into a new on-campus venue starting next season.

Grove broke out to a 10-0 lead and Miami didnąt get its first points until the 4:18 mark, when Stewart nailed a short jumper. The Lady Wardogs narrowed the gap to 12-8 at the turn, then Grove scored the first eight points of the second quarter to open up a 20-8 advantage. Mariah Hicks had two free throws and Makayla Vail added one down the stretch to cut the gap to nine by the break. Margaret Pogue scored 12 points for the Lady Ridgerunners. She was limited to one field goal in the first half.

Stewart headed up the Lady Wardog scoring with 11 points.
