The Grove Mid School basketball teams tipped off their ’09-’10 campaigns last week in action at the Jay Junior High Tournament.

The 8th grade Lady Red team captured first place in their bracket. The squad defeated Miami 40-16 in round one before advancing to the finals with a 26-16 defeat of Jay. The Lady Ridgerunners downed Vinita 44-26 in the finals.

The 8th grade Ridgerunner team defeated Vinita 41-24 to claim third place in their bracket. The group opened tourney play with a 44-27 win over Jay. A 29-20 loss to Kansas, the eventual bracket winner, sent GMS to the third place game.

The 7th grade Lady Red team battled back from an opening round 30-28 loss to Locust Grove to advance to the consolation finals after defeating the Jay “Black” squad 32-3. In the finals the Lady Red team downed Westville 36-25.

Like their 8th grade counterparts, the Ridgerunner 7th grade troops earned a third place finish in their bracket by defeating Locust Grove 23-22. Grove opened the tourney with an 18-16 win over Vinita. A second round loss to eventual bracket champion Jay placed the team in the third-place game.

Tournament host Jay found success in the brackets.

The 7th grade Bulldog squad won their bracket, defeating Westville 39-19, Grove 33-13, and Kansas 35-24 in the finals.

The 7th grade Lady Bulldogs took the runner-up spot in their bracket after falling to Kansas 40-39 in the finals. The 7th grade girls’ team defeated Westville and Vinita on their way to the finals.

The 8th grade Lady Bulldogs finished fourth in their bracket after a 31-12 battle with Kansas. The squad took a 29-27 win over Westville in round one before falling to Grove and landing in the third place game.

The 8th grade Bulldogs team downed Locust Grove 36-11 in the consolation finals. The team opened play with a 44-27 loss to Grove before bouncing back with a 36-24 win over Westville.

Fellow DelCo school the Kansas Comets claimed a first place finish in the 7th grade girls bracket and a third place finish in the 8th grade girls bracket.

The Kansas boys’ 7th grade team finished runners-up in their bracket while the 8th grade team won their bracket with a 44-16 win over Miami in the finals. 

Jay will be hosting a 9th grade tournament this week. Action began yesterday and continues today with games split between Bulldog Arena and the Jay Mid School gym. The tournament finals are scheduled for Thursday.
