The GHS Lady Ridgerunners softball team opened its 2008 seasonal account with a 10-2 victory over the Commerce Lady Tigers in Festival play at Lady Red Field in Grove Tuesday night.

The Grove squad put together a 4-run third inning, fueled by a 2-RBI triple from sophomore third baseman Katie Stout, to erase a brief Lady Tiger lead and set the tone for the remainder of the five inning contest.

Margaret Pogue was the winning pitcher for the Lady Ridgerunners. The senior faced 20 batters and relieved seven Lady Tigers by strikeout. Pogue gave up three hits and two walks in going the distance.

Courtney Watson was the starting pitcher for Commerce and the Lady Tiger pitched all five innings giving up 10 hits and four walks.

Commerce used two Grove errors in the top of the third inning to take an early 2-0 lead. Jaycee Knight and Johna Sharp scored the runs for the Lady Tigers.

The Lady Red responded with five consecutive hits in their side starting with a double from senior catcher Stacia Sarwinski. Pogue knocked a base hit to send Sarwinski home and first baseman Andrea Gonzales joined her teammate on the diamond with a single. Stoutís triple sent both base runners home. Stout stole home on a Commerce passed pitch from starter Watson.

Commerce came back in the fourth with a single from Kourtney Reading. The side was destined to be a three and out affair for the Lady Tigers as Alecia Leonard hit into a fielderís choice that sent Reading to the pine. Groveís Sarwinski then caught Leonard napping at first and made the connection to Gonzales who delivered the tag out. A Pogue strikeout of Mariah Adams brought the top half to an end.

Lady Red junior second baseman Rachel Allington opened the bottom of the fourth with a perfect bunt and was later driven in by Pogue to consolidate the Grove lead at 5-2.

The Lady Red defense posted a four and out at the top of the fifth to stymie any Lady Tiger rally. The Grove bats added five runs in their final side. Stout posted another triple, this time sending Gonzales home. A sacrifice fly from Allington scored Stout. Sophomore Shae Scott scored a run from third on a bases loaded walk of Sarwinski. Pogue hit a double that scored Katelin Threet and Alex Woods to make the 10-2 final.

Pogue finished the game 3 for 4 at the plate with a double, four RBIís, and a run. Stout went 2 for 3 with two triples, three RBIís, and two runs. Sarwinski went 2 for 3 with two doubles, and a run.

The Festival opened with a Grove JV loss to Vinita. The Lady Hornets then downed Commerce 5-2 before the finale game of the meeting between the Lady Tigers and Grove.

Grove travels to Locust Grove today and then on to Claremore Saturday. The Lady Red return home Tuesday the 19th to battle Vinita.
