The Grove Ridgerunner wrestling team spent last weekend on the NEO A&M campus competing in the IBC Mudville Dual Tournament and came away with the runner-up trophy.
The GHS grapplers, defending 3A State Champions, lost a close 45-33 dual in the Championship finals last Saturday evening to the Joplin Eagles club. A Grove forfeit in the 171 lbs round, due to injury, was the difference in the face off.
The tournament results bring the Ridgerunner dual record to 8-1 for the season. Grove opened dual competition with a 64-12 win over Stilwell two weeks ago.
The Ridgerunners landed two student-athletes on the All Tournament team. Senior Connor Sarwinski, at 152 lbs, went 8-0 for the meet with three falls and five decisions. Sophomore Spencer Rutherford posted an 8-0 record in Miami with seven pins.
The Ridgerunners recorded five pins in the finals against Joplin. Sophomore Damien Hopper, at 112 lbs; junior Zach Housley, at 119 lbs; Rutherford, at 130 lbs; senior Dusty Gehrke, at 160 lbs; and junior Weston Culvey, at 215 lbs; all recorded falls over their Joplin opponents. Sarwinski took an 11-6 decision in his 152 lbs match in the finals.
